The CBS Years

485 Madison Avenue (corner of 52nd Street)

From the early 1930s through 1975, this building at 485 Madison housed the offices and studios of CBS – the Columbia Broadcasting System. Herrmann worked at this CBS building from 1933 through 1950, when he moved to Los Angeles.

When CBS moved out in 1975, the facade was redone, and the interior of the building renovated.

The topmost floors of the CBS building housed many of the broadcasting studios. They were far away from they noise emanating from busy Madison Avenue.

During the 1940s, CBS used its facility on West 57th Street to accomodate the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in programs such as Invitation to Music

Though the building pictured may not the facility used by Herrmann, it is one of several buildings on the block owned by CBS and used for news telecasts.

The branch of the New York Public Library at 58th Street had an exceptionally good collection of music scores and books. During his married life at 325 East 57th Street, Herrmann would visit the library which was conveniently located near his house.

In 1965, the music contents of the library were moved to the newly opened Library for the Performing Arts located at Lincoln Center. The original 58th Street library building was demolished, and a new building was built on the same site. The new 58th library still provides service to the neighborhood.

Newlyweds Bernard Herrmann and Lucille Fletcher lived in this building for most of their married life together. It was a short walk from CBS headquarters (at 52nd Street), from the 58th Street library, and a short bus ride to the CBS studios on West 57th Street.

Though considered a very good neighborhood (Greta Garbo lived a few blocks away, and today, Katherine Hepburn and Stephen Sondheim live also just a few blocks away), this house has the misfortune of being near the entrance ramp to the 59th Street Bridge to Queens.
