A special evening, based on the music that Bernard Herrmann wrote for Alfred Hitchcock's films.
One of the most creative and brilliant, if often turbulent, relationships in film history is celebrated in this special concert. Bernard Herrmann's radical approach to writing film music redefined the relationship between image and sound, and his brilliant scores for Psycho, Vertigo and North by North West bear testimony to this.
This world premiere features Herrmann's scores for Hitchcock's films plus other classics such as Citizen Kane and Taxi Driver. It also features rarely seen images and footage of the masters at work.
Musical direction is from Tom Waits / Ornette Coleman bassist Greg Cohen who gathers an ensemble of musicians including guitarist Bill Frisell to perform new arrangements. Original arrangements are performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by composer and Herrmann aficinado Joel McNeely.
Produced by the Barbican in association with Danny Kapilian
Tickets: £15 £20 £25 £30

Bernard Herrmann: More Than the Movies
New York,
USA
| Music: | Three Melodrams, Sinfonietta, Psycho Suite, Wuthering Heights excerpts |
| Conductor: | Jonathan Sheffer |
| Orchestra: | Eos Orchestra |
| Program: | Schoenberg | Accompaniment to a Film Score Herrmann | Three Melodrams: A Shropshire Lad, Annabelle Lee, TBA (concert premieres) Herrmann | Sinfonietta for String Orchestra Herrmann | Suite from Psycho Herrmann | Excerpts from Wuthering Heights (New York premiere). |
Hall: Ethical Culture Society, Auditorium, 2 West 64th Street
Soprano, TBA; Baritone, Nathan Gunn; Actor, TBA.
Bernard Herrmann: More Than The Movies launches the 2001 season on February 15, honoring Mr. Herrmann. Eos will re-create and perform some of Herrmann's experimental radio works for narrator and orchestra, Melodrams, as well as chamber music and orchestral works from before and during his Hollywood career. Schoenberg's Accompaniment to a Film Scene opens a program that pairs Herrmann's early Sinfonietta with the chilling Suite from Psycho and the New York premiere of excerpts from his opera Wuthering Heights, featuring baritone Nathan Gunn.
Beginning his career in New York, Herrmann was an avid member of new music circles, forming a chamber orchestra in order to pursue a conducting career. His early pieces in the manner of Schoenberg matured as he worked in radio and then Hollywood, and his ambition remained high, even as his film music eclipsed all his other efforts. In the end, he became the most Singular composer in the history of movies, composing motion picture scores for such classics as Citizen Kane, Vertigo and Taxi Driver.
There will be a pre-concert chamber music performance as well as a symposium with music historian and publisher John Waxman. Mr. Waxman's father, Franz Waxman, was a prolific film composer and Herrmann's contemporary.

From Sergei Prokofiev to John Williams, 20th Century composers have frequently brought their music to the silver screen, but this music has often been relegated to secondary status by music scholars. Maestro Tiemeyer explores this oft-overlooked genre in a performance highlighting the best of film music, including Bernard Hermann's opening credits to North by Northwest often considered the ("most perfect work composed for film) and film legend Erich Korngold's Violin Concerto, featuring CRSO Concertmaster Takuya Horiuchi.
